Riot!

Artist: PARAMORE

Genre: R&B

(Fueled By Ramen/Warner)

Reviewer: EDWARD GOMEZ

LIKE Fueled By Ramen’s better-known acts, most notably Panic! At The Disco and Gym Class Heroes, Paramore peddles risk-free, radio-ready emo punk. Unlike the rest of the brigade, however, Paramore has a female lead singer who might not be a knockout but knows just what kind of pout is needed to win the teenage male vote. Make no mistake, Hayley Williams is going to be a star. With or without the boys who currently back her.

Musically, there’s nothing especially riotous about 19-year-old Williams and Riot! But the vocals are decent enough and almost all the album’s songs are slick and catchier than the flu – though there are a couple of obvious missteps. However, despite their AOR sheen, We Are Broken and When It Rains do hint at what’s in store for Williams when she finally washes the red and orange streaks from her hair. And, anyway, emo kids need their lighter-wavers, too. No one can pogo non-stop!

Riot! won’t win Paramore awards for innovation. But it looks sets to make them a household name. At least in households that watch TRL and listen to Fall Out Boy.
