Lite FM Presents Flower Power Hits

Artist: VARIOUS ARTISTES

Genre: Pop

(EMI/Warner)

Reviewer: JACOBUS RAJ

WHAT does the phrase “flower power” mean to you? If, like me, you feel that it conjures up images of long-haired, tripped-out hippies advocating free love, universal brotherhood and world peace, then this three-disc compilation will be a disappointment.

It is actually a pretty good compilation of radio-friendly hits from the 1960s, 70s and even the 80s but when you label something flower power, I’d expect more than just songs like If You Leave Me Now by Chicago, Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell and Pat Benatar’s Don’t Walk Away.

The last song, if I’m not mistaken, was released in 1988, way after the era of the flower children had come and gone. Some of the songs here might qualify by virtue of when they were released but, to be honest, this compilation didn’t rock my boat at all!

However, if you’re looking for a nice compilation of oldies to listen to on the road or at home, then this could well be the compilation for you. With almost 60 songs on three discs, there’s quite a lot of music.

Once I got over my disappointment with the name, I actually did enjoy the collection, especially since it is split into three distinct parts – Rock, Country/Sentimental and Funk, Disco & Soul.

Give it a go but don’t expect to relive the mind-altering magic of the era of free love and brotherhood.
