I’M sure we all know by now that “jazz” complications aren’t that likely to have many actual jazz tracks on it. Forget your experimental Herbie Hancock or Sun Ra material, this record doesn’t even have commercial staples like Glenn Miller’s swing anthem In the Mood or Dave Brubeck’s awesome Take Five. What is does have, though, is a string of solid, silky smooth vocal tunes, occasionally with jazz inflections.

For every certified gem like Nina Simone’s My Baby Just Cares for Me and Chet Baker’s My Funny Valentine, we have re-interpretations of pop tunes like Fields of Gold (an aching version by the incomparable Eva Cassidy), Time After Time (Cassandra Wilson) and more. There are also apprearances by legends like Fred Astaire, Tony Bennett and Dean Martin, although that practically begs the Frank Sinatra question!

From 1950s pop singers like Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee to contemporary stars Norah Jones and Corinne Bailey Rae, there’s a lot to choose from; what’s more, this compilations budget pricing makes it a good buy. But I still say that this ain’t jazz!
