TV3 lends a helping hand to tsunami victims

As the nation leapt into 2005 on a sombre note in light of the recent tsunami tragedy, TV3 took a step forward to speed aid to thousands of victims who were left homeless and helpless in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia.

A total of 120 employees of TV3 and 8TV travelled up north to provide disaster relief and distribute aid to the tsunami victims from Dec 30 till Jan 2.

The entourage made a three-and-a-half-day visit to the affected areas of Kuala Muda, Seberang Prai and Kota Kuala Muda in Kedah and Balik Pulau in Pulau Pinang.

Media Prima Berhad’s Group managing director/chief executive officer Abdul Rahman Ahmad, TV3’s chief executive officer Datuk Farid Ridzuan, TV3’s news and current affairs director Datuk Kamarulzaman Zainal and brand management group general manager Anthony Firdaus Bujang led the entourage.

Farid said in a press release: “The immense grief and suffering of families and individuals affected should move us as caring Malaysians to act swiftly to help those in need.

TV3 and 8TV will provide support – be it in kind or cash to help our fellow Malaysians rebuild their lives.

“If it means, going to the ground and getting our hands dirty, we will do so.”

The stations’ aid focused on children and families and included providing school uniforms, shoes and school bags.

TV3 also provided milk formula for infants and toddlers, personal care items for women, clothes, blankets and mattresses to the families at the rehabilitation shelter.

“The catastrophe illustrated in the news, be it on TV or print, may seem tragic enough but the devastation that we saw on-site revealed the awesome power of the waves.

Farid said: “The destruction and losses were great but the anguish experienced by the victims are hard to imagine.

We need to work with the Government to raise funds and assist them in providing relief or transit homes,” said Farid, adding that both stations will continue to provide live and up-to-date coverage on the tragedy which occured on Dec 26.
