New face at Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra

THE Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) has appointed a new general manager, Kim Sargeant, to replace C. Stephen Smith.

Sargeant, from Britain, has worked with many British orchestras, teaching percussion and giving lecture-recitals, before becoming involved in arts administration, managing artistes, promoting concerts, producing recordings, researching composers and repertoire, and writing for various music journals.

In 1986, he was appointed as festival organiser and assistant to the artistic director for the Cheltenham International Festival of Music, a position he held for 12 years.

Other positions he has held include principal percussion of the English Symphony Orchestra, artistic administrator to the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and associate director of the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, Netherlands.

He was also artistic consultant for the Klara Festival in Brussels, part of Belgium’s Flanders International Festival, before accepting his new role at the MPO.
