Loving the timpani

Compiled by JASON CHEAH

Paul Philbert will be performing a timpani concerto on Saturday and Sunday at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas.
THE orchestral instrument, the timpani (kettle drums) gets a rare focus as the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s (MPO) timpani specialist Paul Philbert performs a timpani concerto with the orchestra this Saturday (8.30pm) and Sunday (3pm) at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP).

Under the baton of guest conductor Claus Peter Flor, Philbert will showcase the thundering sounds of the timpani with Sigfried Matthus’ Timpani Concerto – The Forest.

The orchestra will also perform Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 in B minor (Op.74) – Pathetique and Anton von Weber’s opera overture Overture: Der Freischütz.

Matthus’ Timpani Concerto – The Forest is a German work depicting dark deeds in the woods that comes in the shape of one of the very few concertos ever written for the timpani.

Flor helms the orchestra for the second weekend running. Ticket prices range from RM20 to RM95. Call the box office % 03-2051 7007/fax: 03-2051 7077 or e-mail dfp_boxoffice@petronas.com.my.
