J.Lo is back with Rebirth

Compiled by MELODY L. GOH

Jennifer Lopez
Rebirth
Sony BMG

The days of “Bennifer” have become nothing but an embarrassing past for singer-actress-entrepreneur Jennifer Lopez.

Now that she’s married to Marc Anthony, Lopez is no longer constantly in the limelight, preferring to lay low these days. In the eyes of the media, Lopez is a changed woman.

That is probably what she wanted to prove in her new album, aptly titled Rebirth. However, where music is concerned, Lopez is still very much the same singer you heard on all her three previous albums.

The first single from Rebirth, Get Right, is an annoying mix of hip-hop/dance that only someone with her physique and dance abilities can dance to.

Her other songs, thankfully, are slightly better. Two of these songs feature guest artistes Fat Joe (on Hold You Down) and Fabolous (on a hyped up version of Get Right).

Husband Marc Anthony shares songwriting credits with Lopez on (Can’t Believe) This Is Me, which ironically is a song about breaking up.

Other songs include Step Into My World, Whatever You Wanna Do, Ryde Or Die and Still Around.

Ciara
Goodies
Sony BMG

Teenager Ciara (pronounced see-air-ra) is supposedly the first female singer to take on the new cRunk &B genre.

CRunk & B is basically just a new fangled form of R&B, first administered by singer Usher on his award winning track, Yeah!. It’s not the best musical genre, but as music becomes more and more monotonous these days, a little change doesn’t hurt anyone.

Ciara’s Goodies include bearable songs like 1, 2 Step (with Missy Elliott), Pick Up the Phone, Other Chicks, Next to You (with R. Kelly), Oh (with Ludacris) and Hotline.

Kelly Clarkson
Breakaway
Sony BMG

The original American Idol proves that she’s not just a pretty face, or a fad. In this second album, Clarkson shows off what she can really do, and she does them impressively in various singing styles.

There’s still room for improvement, of course, but Breakaway unleashes another talent of Clarkson’s that many might not have known she had – songwriting.

The petite singer co-wrote six songs on the album, including Behind These Hazel Eyes, Because Of You and Hear Me.

While the album is highly influenced by rock music (what do you expect with Avril Lavigne and those boys from Evanescence writing some of the tracks?), there are also some nice pop ballads to listen to on lazy Sundays.

A live track of Beautiful Disaster, taken from her debut Thankful, is also on the album.

Jesse McCartney
Beautiful Soul
Sony BMG

This actor-turned-singer has so much going on for him right now it’s unbelievable that he’s only 17. Jesse McCartney looks a little like his singing peer Aaron Carter, but thankfully, he has better talent.

Beautiful Soul is McCartney’s debut solo album, and already he has received a lot of good reviews for it.

He has also doubled his fan base, thanks to the album’s success and to his hit TV show, Summerland (it’s showing here every Monday on Ntv7).

His music probably won’t go down well with the older audience though, but it doesn’t matter. The kids still love him.

Beautiful Soul contains 12 tracks, which includes She’s No You, Take Your Sweet Time, Without U, That Was Then, Because You Live and The Stupid Things.

Rupee
1 On 1
Warner Music

Rupee's debut and sophomore albums may have been hits, but this latest one is kicking off a little too slow.

The songs on 1 On 1 are not bad. In fact, some of the fusions of different musical styles are quite interesting.

But the singer from Barbados needs to kick up his songwriting skills a notch if he wants to stay in the scene.

Some of the tracks in the album are What Happens in de Party, Crime of the Century, Helpless, Do the Damn Thing, Tempted to Touch and Punked.
