Joey Yung delivers a night to remember
By LI EE KEEIt was evident the hardwork Joey Yung put in to make her concert at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, last Friday a success. Everything was perfectly executed.
Yung delivered a flawless performance that proved her worthy of the prestigious Jade Solid Gold 2004 best female artiste honour. It would have also made her mentor, the late Roman Tam, proud. Her efforts did not go unnoticed by the appreciative audience, who clapped and cheered throughout the two-hour show.
At 8.20pm, the lights in the amphitheatre dimmed. The six back-up dancers came on stage, followed by Yung’s highly anticipated appearance.
Dressed in a sexy, glittery red number, which showed off her washboard midriff, she kicked off the show with a two-song dance medley, Loong Zhong Dang Cheung (literally translated as Presenting) and Show Up. The crowd went berserk when she took off her jacket.
“How long have you waited for me?” she asked fans in Cantonese after the performance. “Long”, came the reply.
Yung revealed she had been in Malaysia for the past few days. The spicy food lover added that she had to watch what she ate for the sake of the concert. She cheekily asked if she had become fat. Her 5,000-plus fans reassured her that she was still gorgeously slender.
Three slow tunes – Tap Bit Kar Bun (Special Guest), Chuo Qi (In Tears) and Qie (Fear) – followed before the first set ended and she hurried off stage for her first costume change.
Ballads are undoubtedly Yung’s forte even if she claimed that she has not had any experience in love. “I rely on my imagination and watching numerous love flicks,” she said during the concert.
Listening to her belting out one sad love song after another, with the intensity of one who’s been hurt before (at times tears welled in her eyes), it was nothing short of amazing.
However, it got a bit droning after listening to several of such tunes.
Yung did her best to break the monotony by bantering with the audience and soon they were like old friends catching up with one another.
While waiting for her to change clothes once again, the audience were treated to pictures of Yung on four big screens as she made her transition from an adorable toddler to a gawky teen and now a gorgeous woman.
On cue, this lovely lady “rode” out on a male dancer who was on all fours. Dressed sultrily in a lacy black kimono, she rendered two equally sexy medleys, Shen Hun Din Dou (Head over Heels) and Mad About You.
At one point during the performance, a male dancer helped her out of her kimono to reveal a bareback top and side-slit pants.
Yung had three costume changes that night, each one more provocative than the other. Boasting of a slender frame, Yung was obviously eager to reveal her hot bod. No one, especially the hot-blooded males in the audience, was complaining. But she wanted confirmation anyway. “Am I sexy tonight?” she asked. A resounding yes echoed throughout the arena although there were a few sensible fans who shouted that she was too thin.
She performed three moving ballads – Tou Bei Lei (Avoiding You), 16 Hou Ai Ren (Lover No.16) and Shui Loi Ai Ngor (Who Will Love Me?) – before announcing that it was time to get one lucky male audience to be her mock boyfriend. But not just any guy. Two were rejected (one for being too dark and another too skinny) before she finally picked Sean. It was an experience he would never forget.
Another quick costume change and Yung was back in a delightful emerald dress with a slit that showed off her right thigh in all its fair glory. She performed her very first single Mei Zhi (Don't Know), a Cantonese version of Jennifer Paige’s Crush.
Her special guest that night was a member of her band, guitarist Joey Tang, who is also a member of Hong Kong’s renowned band Tai Chi. They performed a duet, Lau Ju Ngor Ba (Ask Me to Stay), a Tai Chi classic.
Several more ballads followed and it was time go bid adieu. Yung ended her show appropriately with Ngor Dik Kiew Mou (My Pride), which she said closely mirrored her own life story. It was the best song of the night. She sang with all her heart and delivered an emotional finale to her performance.
Joey Yung Live Show Up! two-night concert was organised by Genting – City of Entertainment.
