Music with Maazel
World-renowned artiste and conductor Lorin Maazel will conduct the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) for the first time at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas for a special one-night performance on March 14 at 8.30pm.
This special performance marks another milestone for the MPO, which to date, has collaborated with prominent conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Neville Marriner and Gennadi Rozhdestvensky.
Maazel and the MPO will perform Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet – Fantasy Overture and Violin Concerto in D (Op.35) featuring violinist Lidia Baich.
Born in 1930, Maazel has led more than 150 orchestras in over 5,000 opera and concert performances. He has conducted throughout Europe, Australia, North and South America, Japan, the former Soviet Union, and also at most international festivals and opera houses the likes of Salzburg, Edinburgh and Lucerne, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Paris Opera and Covent Garden.
He became the music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 2002 and they have performed in the United States and Asia, including performances at the DFP in season 02/03. He has also held positions with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, Pittsburgh Symphony, Vienna Staatsoper, Cleveland Orchestra and Deutsche Oper (Berlin).
As a prominent violinist, composer and recording artiste, Maazel has some 300 recordings to his name.
Twenty-four-year-old Austrian violinist Baich is regarded as one of the most extraordinary young violinists on the international concert scene today. Born in St Petersburg (her mother is Russian), she won the 1998 Grand Prix d’ Eurovision (at the age of 16) with an outstanding performance of the Henry Vieuxtemps Fifth Concerto. The head of the international jury then, the late Lord Yehudi Menuhin, presented her with the title “European Musician of the Year”.
Being much in favour of the classic crossover scene, Maazel invited her to join star tenor Andrea Bocelli on his world tour in 2002. Consequently, she performed with him at London’s Wembley Arena London, the Bercy Paris, and stadium halls on both sides of the Atlantic. The year after she was part of the 10th anniversary of “Pavarotti and Friends” in Modena, Italy.
Tickets to watch the special concert by the MPO and Maazel are priced at RM225 and RM295 and are available to the public from today. Call the box office at 03-20517007/ fax bookings: 03-20517077 or e-mail dfp_boxoffice@petronas.com.my.
