Reeling in true love

Miriam Yeung talks about how she netted the role of a fishmonger in Hooked on You.

It's been close to a decade since Miriam Yeung began her acting career. During that time, she has played a wide range of roles, including that of a police officer, has-been TV star, beer girl and martial arts master. But none of these personas have been quite as down-to-earth as her latest role. In Hooked on You, she plays a fishmonger!

Actress Miriam Yeung plays a fishmonger in Hooked on You.
And if you have seen the trailer, you’ll notice how handy Yeung is with the cleaver as she sets to work on the fish. Credit goes to director Law Wing Cheong’s family, who are fishmongers and passed on secrets of the trade to Yeung.

“They taught me how to gut and fillet the fish and their selling techniques. They taught me how to identify the different fish and which ones sold faster. I also visited markets to see how fishmongers talk, their lingo and studied their way of life,” Yeung related during a phone interview from Hong Kong recently.

Hooked on You, which also stars Eason Chan, revolves around Miu (Yeung), who has to work as a fishmonger to pay off her father’s debts.

This is her second collaboration with Chan. Their first on-screen project was Feel 100% in 2001.

“We have known each other for 10 years now. And having worked together in the past, we understand one another better and there is chemistry between us.”

Although the role of Miu was not written specifically for Yeung, she nonetheless shares many similarities with her character. The most obvious being that both are in their 30s.

“And we’re both successful in our careers but we have yet to find true love!” Yeung announced before breaking into one of her famed guffaws.

When asked if this was due to her high expectations, the 34-year-old said that being in her 30s has made her less cautious about falling in love.

“At my age now, I’m afraid that I wouldn’t even have the chance to experience heartbreak.”

And her criteria for Mr Right?

“He doesn’t have to be rich, but he has to have a sense of responsibility, is understanding and funny.”

Yeung, recently signed to Leon Lai’s record label AMusic, has started work on her new album of Mandarin and Cantonese songs.

She will also go on a concert tour that kicks off in Hong Kong in October before moving to Malaysia, China and the United States.

She hopes to shoot another movie, preferably a comedy.

“I want to do something light-hearted and cheerful. Personally, I enjoy romantic comedies because of its feel-good factor. And I believe that it is a stress reliever. It can also change one’s perception about things.”
