Roll out the red carpet for the Golden Horse Awards.

IT is the time of the year for the Golden Horse Awards (GHA), Taiwan’s version of the Oscars, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious Asian movie awards.

This year’s 46th Golden Horse Awards Film Festival runs from Nov 5 to 26, and culminates in the presentation of 23 awards on Nov 28 in Taipei.

Best Leading Actor nominee Daniel Wu for Like A Dream.

Following last year’s best film win by China’s The Warlords, this year sees another neck-to-neck fight among top films from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Like A Dream by Macau-born Australian filmmaker Clara Law leads the pack with nine nods, including best feature film, best director (for Law), best leading actress (Yolanda Yuan) and best leading actor (Daniel Wu).

Taiwan’s own No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti follows with eight nominations, including best feature film, best director (Leon Dai), best leading actor and best new performer (Chen Wen Pin) and the outstanding Taiwanese film of the year.

A favourite: Nominated Best Leading Actress Li Bingbing for The Message.

China’s Cow gets seven nods, including best feature film, best director (Guan Hu) and best leading actor (Huang Bo), while Taiwan’s Yang Yang and China-Taiwan film The Message get six nods each.

The best leading actor category sees American-born Hong Kong actor Daniel Wu (GHA best supporting actor for New Police Story in 2004) nominated for Like A Dream; and Hong Kong actor Nick Cheung (best leading actor at the 28th Hong Kong Film Awards) getting another nomination for Beast Stalker.

Beijing-born Zhang Ziyi, who has yet to win a GHA despite receiving best actress nominations for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and 2046 (2004), gets a best supporting actress nod for Chen Kai Ge-helmed Forever Enthralled.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Zhang Ziyi for F orever Enthralled.

Wilson Yip-helmed martial arts flick Ip Man, which bagged the best picture and best action choreography awards at the 28th Hong Kong Film Awards, gets another best action choreography nod for Sammo Hung and Tony Leung Siu Hung.

Two Malaysian filmmakers received nominations this year. Ho Yuhang’s Malaysian-made At The End Of Daybreak received one nomination for best supporting actress for Hong Kong actress Kara Wai Ying Hung. Taiwan-based Tsai Ming Liang’s Face scored five nominations, including best feature film and best director.
