Bitter-sweet love in Torch Song Massacre

By CHAN LAI HUN

Ah ... tragic love songs. Where would we be without these gloomy tunes to soundtrack our pitiful moments of rejection and despair?

From Billie Holiday to Axl Rose to P. Ramlee, self-piteous tragic love songs are proof that not even the wisest among us have figured out that love comes with no warranty. Still, we love the pain.

In tune with the season for love – but one with a little twist – The Annexe Gallery in Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, presents Torch Song Massacre, tomorrow and on Saturday. Tailor made for anyone who has ever had their heart been broken by a boy, a girl, their parents or country.

Jo Kukathas takes part in Torch Song Massacre tomorrow and Saturday.

Tragic love songs will be performed by some of KL’s best music and stage talents, including Jo Kukathas, Shanon Shah, Azmyl Yunor, Junji Delfino, David Gomes, Llew Marsh, Zalina Lee, Paolo Delfino, Sherry, Panda Head Curry?, 13 Voices in My Head, Jerome Kugan and special guest Rohaizad Suaidi.

There will be a Mystery Misery Lucky Draw for the unfortunate ones in the audience. And for the rest, there will be a bar set up where they can drown their sorrows at reasonable prices. Admission is RM25 (adults) and RM20 (students).

  • When you watch Love... Perhaps?, presented by the Penang Players, you get triple the joy. This dinner show features a triple bill of one-act plays, all dealing with love.

Blind Date by Mal Anderson sees a young couple meeting for dinner for four. When two of their friends do not show up, it becomes obvious that their friends have set them up.

A blind date in the company of mutual friends now becomes an embarrassing situation for two near-strangers.

It is directed by Joelle Saint Arnoult and features Fadzrina Ariffin, Maya Hanum and Eric Yeoh.

Next up is Inconvenient People by Paul Hannah. Lawyer Kim’s wife wants a divorce. His personal and domestic problems have reached such a point that he feels the only way out for him is to end it all. He is about to take the final step towards oblivion when a potential client, Robyn, shows up.

This play, co-directed by Joelle Saint Arnoult and Lucille Dass, features Ian Kerr, Dass and Anna Tan.

Finally, there is Calling it Quits by Mal Anderson. On the advice of their respective solicitors, Joanie and Max, who are going through the process of divorce, meet in the cafeteria of a shopping centre.

In this neutral ground, they endeavour to establish some idea of the demands being made by each other. Their patience is worn thin and any chance of compromise seems remote. They are angry, hurt and bitter. This is the end, maybe, but it might be the beginning of something new.

The show is directed by May Lim and features Mary Schneider, Matt Holton and Cathelynn Lim.

Love ... Perhaps? is staged at Sri Pinang Ballroom, Level 1, Dorsett Penang Hotel, 3 Jalan Larut, Penang, tomorrow and on Saturday at 7pm.

The Feb 13 show is by invitation with minimum donation of RM75 (dinner and show); the Feb 14 charity performance is by invitation with minimum donation of RM85 (dinner, show and dance).
