Small-screen romance


COUCH potatoes have lots to look forward to this Valentine’s Day. Just cosy up on your favourite settee and keep your remote handy. Here’s what is on offer:

>Scarlett – 4 Part Series, 10am - 4pm (Hallmark Channel, 702)

In this long-awaited sequel to Gone with The Wind, Scarlett’s flight from the scrutiny of Atlanta Society takes her on a journey to Savannah and Charleston, to England, and to Ireland, where she discovers her family’s roots. Stars Joanne Whalley-Kilmer and Timothy Dalton.

> Starter Wife (Mini Series) Marathon, 6pm (Hallmark Channel, 702)

Emmy award-winner Debra Messing stars as the bored and pampered wife of a Hollywood studio executive, who is dumped just weeks before her pre-nup was set to expire (and just as age has begun to take its toll)! Abandoned by the Hollywood community that once adored her, she now must look beyond the confines of her isolated life and find in the real world around her new possibilities she never saw before. Based on the best-selling novel by Gigi Levengi Grazer. SAlso stars Joe Mantegna, Judy Davis and Anika Noni Rose.

> Once in the Summer, 9pm (Astro Kirana 122)

Lee Byung Hun (Suk Young) and Soo Ae (Jung In) star in this moving Korean romance about 10 days of love over a 30-year span. The sophomore film from director Jo Geun Sik goes back and forth from the present to that fateful summer 30 years ago when the leads first met.

In 1969, South Korea was in the midst of great economic change and political turbulence under the Park Chung Hee regime; set against such chaotic times, the film brings out remarkably simple and genuine sentiments with a heartwarming yet heartbreaking love story.

> Very ‘Villain-time’, 4pm - 10pm (Disney Channel 615)

This Valentine’s Day, villains from your favourite Disney Channel shows are in the mood for love! Look out for love’s twists and trysts on Kim Possible, Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, Emperor’s New School, Suite Life on Deck, Phineas and Ferb, Mr Bean – Live Action, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

> She’s the One, 12.20pm (Star Movies 413)

The two Fitzpatrick brothers, Mickey and Francis, appear to have little in common. The older sibling is a volatile cab driver while the younger is a settled stockbroker. While Mickey recently wed a woman he barely knew, Francis is married to his lifelong sweetheart. The only thing the two have in common is Heather, who is Mickey’s ex-fiancé and Francis’ current lover. When Heather gives Francis the watch Mickey returned to her after their break-up, things get complicated. In the fallout, the siblings learn about love, life and brotherhood. Starring Edward Burns, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston and Mike McGlone.

Valentine cards are a waste of paper, chocolates cause cavities, and flowers are cliché. So what’s the ultimate gift for loved ones on Valentine’s Day? Love song dedications aired on Channel [V]!

> Titanic, 3.55pm (Star Movies 413)

Winner of 11 Oscars, this epic action-packed romance is set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the “unsinkable” Titanic. She was the most luxurious liner of her era, ultimately carrying over 1,500 people to their deaths in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Rose DeWitt Bukater, a 17-year-old, upper-class American, suffocating under the rigid confines and expectations of Edwardian society, falls for a free-spirited young steerage passenger named Jack Dawson. Once he opens her eyes to the world that lies outside her gilded cage, Rose and Jack’s forbidden love grows into a powerful force that echoes across the years into the present. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane.

>Great Expectations, 10.35pm (Star Movies Ch 413)

Alfonso Cuaron directs this modern-day reworking of the classic Charles Dickens’ tale. A young man, Finnegan Bell, leaves his privileged upbringing in Florida and heads to New York City to become an artist. There his life is changed when he meets three disparate strangers – Lustig, a dangerous, escaped convict; Estella, a beautiful but aloof woman; and Nora Dinsmoor, a wealthy eccentric. Starring Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow and Hank Azaria.
