Deserving wins
By AZHARIAH KAMIN
The 22nd Malaysian Film Festival in Kota Kinabalu brought smiles all around.
TO her fans and friends, it was long overdue recognition for Yasmin Ahmad when she won the Best Director award posthumously for her work in Talentime at the recently-concluded 22nd Malaysian Film Festival (MFF) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Yasmin also won Best Screenplay award for her work on the movie. Her two fresh charges – Mohd Syafie Naswip and singer-actress Jaclyn Victor – won the Best Supporting Actor and Most Promising Actress respectively for their roles in the movie.
Yasmin’s untimely passing will surely be missed by those in film fraternity, as actor-director Afdlin Shauki alluded to in his acceptance speech when his movie Papadom took the prize for Best Film.
Young talent: Liyana Jasmay bagged the best actress award for her role in Papadom. In a phone interview yesterday, Afdlin said: “I was quite emotional accepting the award for many reasons. One of them was that I was thinking about Yasmin. Even though we weren’t that close, we used to call each other and talk about films. Everytime she finished a film, she would invite me to watch and discuss it. I will miss her for that and we, as the industry, will surely miss her works.
“Secondly, I wasn’t really thinking about winning any award. When I made Papadom, my intention was only to tell my story, and for it to be screened in the cinemas.”
Afdlin, 38, had reason to be emotional on Saturday night when the awards were handed out at the Dewan Cancelor, Universiti Sabah, Malaysia.
Papadom, a tale about a single father and his daughter – scheduled for screening on Oct 8 – hauled in five awards at the MFF.
The movie won Best Film, Best Actor (Afdlin), Best Actress (Liyana Jasmay), Best Musical Score (Syed Ahmad Faizal/ Pacai ) and Best Original Story (Afdlin).
“Winning the Best Film award is big honour for me and this is the most prestigious award I’ve ever had,” said Afdlin. “I got the inspiration for Papadom during a holiday with my wife and two daughters (aged 10 and eight) in Malacca. It was at the end of our holiday when I started asking questions about what I would do if my wife were not around.
“It is losely based on my relationship with my daughters. Basically, in the past 10 years, I have been focusing so much on my work that I hardly spent time with my girls.
“As a father, Saadom (in Papadom) tries his best to raise his daughter and I’m sure many fathers out there can empathise with his predicament of raising his child on his own.”
For his portrayal of Saadom, Afdlin beat Que Haidar (Maut), Rashidi Ishak (Setem), Awal Ashaari (Syurga Cinta) and Mahesh J Kishore (Talentime) to take the Best Actor trophy.
Afdlin Shauki won best actor for his part in Papadom. This is Afdlin’s third time winning the best actor award, after Soal Hati (15th Malaysian Film Festival in 2001) and Buli Balik (19th Malaysian Film Festival in 2006).
“Whenever I make a film, it is more of me telling my story and hopefully people will watch it,” said Afdlin whose other movie Los Dan Faun was named Best Comedy.
For young actress Liyana Jasmay, 21, her win came as no surprise to many. Her main contenders for the Best Actress award were Nabila Huda (Bohsia), Sharifah Amani (Sayang U Can Dance), Nadia Mustafar (Jangan Tegur) and Heliza Helmi (Syurga Cinta).
The talented Liyana first caught the attention of movie industry when she was nominated most promising actress for her convincing role in Castello three years ago.
“I’m so glad that I won the award for Papadom. This win is due to the team work between everyone involved. In Papadom I played Miasara, Saadom’s rebellious daughter.
“Working with Afdlin was a great experience. As writer and director for the movie, Afdlin really knows what he wants from us. Papadom is basically a simple story between father and daughter but Afdlin’s story telling makes it so sweet and interesting to watch,” said Liyana who said that she would give her prize money to her parents.
For Mohd Syafie Nawip, 17, winning the Best Supporting Actor was bittersweet.
Syafie, a fifth former of Sekolah Menengah Gombak Setia, couldn’t attend the festival in Sabah because it clashed with his extra revision classes for SPM.
“I couldn’t go due to my classes at school and my mother was also not very keen on me going as Kota Kinabalu is quite a distance away,” said Syafie, who added that he would save his prize money.
“I’m very happy with the win but it would have been a lot sweeter if Mak Yasmin had been here with us. She is my second ‘mum’ and I really miss her laugh. She laughed a lot to encourage us not to give up when filming got tough,” said Syafie who won the award for his role as Hafiz, a student whose mother is dying, in Yasmin’s Talentime.
“Yasmin always told us not to be too proud of our wins as it would only make us arrogant,” said Syafie who won the Best Young Actor award for his role in Mukhsin at the 20th Malaysian Film Festival in 2007. “So although I’m happy about my accomplishment, I won’t let it go to my head.”
