Modern take on Hamlet

ARTSPERE
Compiled by SHEELA CHANDRAN

ONE of the most famous Shakespearean plays, Hamlet, is making its way to Pentas 2, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre’s (KLPac), Sentul Park in Sentul, KL.

This will mark the final main stage performance presented by the Theatre for Young People Ensemble for its 2009 season.

Directed by Chris Ling, the powerful tale opens with Hamlet returning to court, only to find his father murdered and his mother married to the murderer. He is faced with a terrible dilemma – should he avenge his father’s death?

This modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic will focus on the relationships and the people involved in this tragic tale with the politics of the story taking a back seat. The four-hour long play has been adapted to a palatable 90-minute performance for the urban audience to enjoy.

Leading the cast are Izmir Husein and Michael Tan. Showtime is Sept 10-13 (8.30pm, with shows on Sept 12 and 13 at 3pm). Tickets are priced at RM25 and RM15 (for students, senior citizens and the disabled). For details, call 03-4047 9000 or browse klpac.org / t4yp.wordpress.com.
